Design Concept
Mr. Lai, the homeowner, chose to create this second residence at a mature stage of life, inspired by memories of growing up in the old streets of Taipei. The overall design blends refined acoustics with delicate material textures, while integrating art pieces and master-crafted furniture to shape a tasteful and design-driven home.
Key Design Highlights
-
Piano-Centered Space
Reflecting the owner’s identity as a pianist, a Steinway piano becomes the centerpiece. Burmese teak flooring and a textured wood-fiber acoustic ceiling enhance sound performance. A hidden “Star of David” sound diffuser balances acoustics throughout the room.
-
Dialogue with the Surroundings
With the residence located near a grand hotel, the living room wall was reimagined using Italian travertine and Prairie-style stone columns inspired by Mayan motifs, reinforcing architectural presence.
-
Art & Color Accents
Featuring watercolor works of Taiwan’s countryside by master artist Shiy De-jinn. Burgundy red, favored by the hostess, adds vibrancy and daily inspiration for piano practice.
-
Atmosphere & Detailing
Dark green velvet acoustic curtains complement the piano and stone wall. A display zone for porcelain and glass artworks is placed above the music cabinet. Ceiling height variations and lighting effects add dramatic tension to the space.
-
Tea & Coffee Nook
Outside the kitchen, a compact tea and coffee station is designed with wood, stone, leather, and iron-gray metal, creating a refined corner for the couple’s tea rituals. Overall, the home reflects the serene wabi-sabi charm of “old Taipei” elegance.
