Design Concept

The campus planning and professional facilities of Taipei National University of the Arts embody the vision of its founding president, Mr. Pao Yu-Yu: “With gentleness and sincerity, we must provide world-class professional skills and equipment to Taiwanese students, enabling them to operate, learn, create, and perform with their own hands.”

Building upon this vision, the founding chair of the Department of Dance, Mr. Lin Hwai-min, emphasized that the Dance Theater must meet international touring standards. This includes a backstage area six times larger than the stage itself, designed to support scenery production, rehearsals, rigging, sound systems, lighting control, and even a container loading zone—allowing students to experience the full process of performance logistics, from stagecraft to packing and transportation.

Thus, this Dance Theater was realized under high expectations and clear objectives. Though officially called a “Grand Classroom,” it is fully equipped with the functions of a world-class performance venue. Every stage of the process—from equipment checks and setup to packing after performances—becomes a vital hands-on learning opportunity. This comprehensive training model has gradually shaped Taiwan’s standards for professional dance productions, with the “Dance Theater – Grand Classroom” serving as the most complete space for such practice, guided and assessed by the faculty.

The planning of this space goes beyond practicality; it was designed to meet international benchmarks, ensuring seamless compatibility in workflows, equipment applications, spatial experience, and technical coordination. This reflects the original vision and persistence of President Pao and Chair Lin.

The project was led by architect C. Y. Lee, with lighting, rigging, catwalk, and control systems engineered by Ether Consultants. Feng Ge Design undertook the interior integration and fabrication, while Fu Mao Audio provided technical collaboration. Together, these teams created a multifunctional dance space that balances both education and performance at the highest level.
